Email Security

In the past, our mail servers only required a password when you retrieved your email. Spammers have been trying to use our servers to send junk mail through the Internet. Although our servers do not allow this, our servers had to check each message before it was denied. We have implemented SMTP Authentication on our mail servers, which now require a username:password when trying to send email. This has been done to reduce the traffic overhead created by non-customers trying to send SPAM through our mail servers, while still allowing you to use them to send mail out as normal.

You can go to the Email Update page, which contains instructions on how to change your email program for SMTP Authentication. It is a quick process and should only take 2-3 minutes to complete. Please do this change as soon as possible. Without setting SMTP Authentication on your email program, you will not be able to successfully send email to people outside of OVIS's network.

Nationwide Dial-Up Access

We have finally secured access numbers throughout the United States, parts of Canada, as well as Puerto Rico. Each of the dial up numbers is V.92 compatible which should connect you at the fastest speed your modem will allow. Don't worry if you have a non-v.92 modem as our modems are smart and will fall back to support whatever speed modem you have. With the setup of these new numbers, you can now use your account while traveling out of the area. Visiting a relative, on a business trip, or on vacation are not a problem anymore. If we have a local number at your destination you can freely use it and continue to connect to OVIS as normal. A list of our access numbers will be posted on our website soon.

To take advantage of the nationwide access and also our Accelerated Dial-Up (listed below), it will be necessary for you to start using our new OVIS Dialer.

OVIS Dialer

We have finished the setup of our new OVIS Dialer to take the place of the limited dialer bundled with version of Windows. The Windows dialer has a widely known problem of giving false error messages, causing connection problems, not having an update facility, and not being able to properly support multiple access numbers. Our new dialer will solve these issues plus add some additional functionality.

Some of our dialers features:

  • Fully integrates with Windows
  • Can automatically download and apply updates to itself
  • Access Number selector allowing you to easily change your dialup numbers at any time
  • Consistent support of 10 digit dialing
  • Easy access to Options and Dialing Properties (call waiting, connect automatically, launching browser upon connection, etc)
  • Automatic redial, including support for alternate access numbers
  • Built in Statistics window showing your connect speed, sent/received transfer rate
  • Built in running Call Log showing total time online, date of connections, duration of connection, etc.

How Do I Get It?

http://www.ovis.net/updates/dialer.exe is the link pointing straight to our dialer. It is a relatively small file (around 420k) so it should not take too long to download. If you click on the link in Internet Explorer, it should pop open a File Download window asking if you want to Save or Run (some versions may say Open) the file. If you click Save, you will need to select a location on your computer to download the file. I strongly recommend selecting My Desktop as it will create an icon on your desktop for you to double click to install the program. If you select Run (open), which is probably the easiest option, it will download the file and then automatically start the installation for you. NOTE: The Dialer isn't digitally signed yet so you may get a warning about running a file which isn't signed. It is completely safe to run it.

By downloading and installing the OVIS Dialer you are automatically switching over to our new access numbers and taking advantage of our Nationwide Access. The Dialer is already populated with all of our new access numbers. As we add additional numbers, your new OVIS Dialer will automatically download them while you are online.

NOTE: There is no new Moundsville number in the new OVIS Dialer. Our current Moundsville numbers will soon be disconnected as they are not compatible with the Accelerated Dial-Up service. For most people dialing into one of our present Moundsville numbers, this should not be a problem if you are on an extended calling plan. You can select either Wheeling WV, New Martinsville WV, or St. Clairsville OH as your new dial up number.

Please double check with your local telephone company to make sure a number is a local call for you. Ohio Valley Internet Service is not responsible for any long distance charges incurred when connecting to our service.

Accelerated Dial-Up

How would you like to surf the Internet at speeds up to 5 to 7 times faster than normal? With our upcoming Internet/Web accelerator, you will be able to connect and browse at speeds approaching those of DSL ... without the hassle and headache of switching providers and added costs. Pages that previously took almost 30 seconds to load, can now be viewed in less than 7 seconds, on average, and sometimes even faster.

Popular Web Sites Regular Dial-Up Our Accelerated Dial-Up How much FASTER?
eBay 11.65 seconds 2.97 seconds 3.92 X faster
USA Today 32.43 seconds 3.77 seconds 8.60 X faster
Mapquest.com 30.56 seconds 5.01 seconds 6.10 X faster
Monster.com 11.74 seconds 3.04 seconds 3.86 X faster
CNN 11.68 seconds 2.26 seconds 5.17 X faster

Our Accelerated Dial-Up is the next best thing to DSL, at a fraction of the price. Unlike costly and limited availability broadband solutions, accelerated dial-up is:

  • Available anywhere there is a telephone line.
  • Requires NO new hardware.
  • Is easy to install -- a few clicks will download it to your PC!
  • Faster access to all of your favorite Web sites.
What Will Be Accelerated What Will NOT Be Accelerated
Web Pages - text, html, xml, javascript and style sheets MP3 files, executables & other compressed files -Streaming media, audio and video files, and zip files
Graphics & Photos - .jpg and .gif images and Flash content Files downloaded outside your browser using FTP
Email Traffic - all email (incoming and outgoing) traffic including file attachments. Works with Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.
Browser-based Web Email - Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.

This same technology also allows us to implement two additional services; Popup & Ad Blocker as well as a Privacy Manger.  Pop-up ads can slow down your Internet surfing, not to mention they are very annoying. A lot of third party pop-ad blockers do stop pop-ups but they monitor your web activity. Have you ever notice how you mysteriously started getting junk mail. Our solution will help put a stop to these annoying pup-ups.

To use the Accelerated Dial-Up feature you will need to download a software client that installs on your computer.
